Recovering lost contacts after syncing with iTunes

I recently bought an iPhone 3g.
I had around 250 contacts on the phone.
However, after syncing with iTunes, I appear to have lost almost all of my contacts and need to know how to retrieve them. I have read that iTunes backs up your iPhone when you first connect but I can't fin the file/folder.
I am desperate to retrieve my lost phone numbers etc. - can anyone help?

CNet's TOS do not allow signature links in posts.

I have asked for yours to be removed.

I have a Hp Pavilion dv7-3065dx laptop with windows7 and "I" just did the same thing.. The only difference is... my laptop doesn't have a "Documents and SettingsApplication DataApple ComputerMobileSyncBackup" option as you mentioned above. I can't seem to find itunes backup file anywhere.. it's so frustrating that you have to constantly sit and watch every move itunes makes while sync's... EEeerr!!! I lost over 200 contacts!! Please help!

Thanks for this. However, when I try to add the folder to my Address book it says 'No cards found' - 'No importable cards were found.'
Is there a way for me to convert the information contained in the Backup folder to v-cards and then iport them or is there another way?

I may not be able to help with your current problem, but I can definitely help prevent it from occuring in the future.

If you don't have a gmail account, sign up for one. Then put all your contacts into your gmail. Google sync allows you to have your calendar, contacts, and email all sync to your phone. Google is one of the most reliable companies on earth and your contacts will be stored with them. I buy a new iPhone every time it is updated and all I do is enter my info into the phone and everything is populated for me.

Beyond that, if you like using a calendar, your gmail calendar and your phone calendar sync. If you add, change, or remove an event on one it does the same thing on the other. This will un-complicate your life.

Just watch this video and enjoy! http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
