The fix *I* have found is to disconnect/reconnect the HDMI cable on the rear of the set (HDM!-1) from the Comcast/Motorola DCH46416 DVR box. But why is this happening in the first place, and is there a permanent fix?

Is often a problem of HDCP and well, why would consumers want to know all this? They want it to just work.
Call the Comcast lines.
See if Sony issued new firmware.
Good luck,
Bob
PS. Many find that component connections don't do this.

i had the same issue this morning. i called sony to get someone to help me get my tv working again. first two questions were "are you connected to a cable box and is it a motorola?" i answered yes and yes. seems sony bravia has an issue with a motorola cable box. i had to unplug the cable box and plug it back in after a few minutes. i know it was the cable box and NOT my sony tv because i still got a picture when i turned on the dvd player. i hope this helps...
